How the interaction occurs:
Rilpivirine needs some gastric acid to be absorbed. Antacids and H2 antagonists decrease the amount of acid in your stomach.
What might happen:
If you take an antacid or H2 antagonist at the same time as your rilpivirine, the amount of rilpivirine that is absorbed into your blood may decrease and it may not work as well.
What you should do about this interaction:
Let your healthcare professionals (e.g. doctor or pharmacist) know that you are taking these medicines together. If you are taking a H2 antagonist (e.g. cimetidine, famotidine, nizatidine, ranitidine), take it at least 12 hours before or 4 hours after you take your rilpivirine. If you are taking an antacid (aluminum/magnesium hydroxide, calcium carbonate), take it at least 2 hours before or 4 hours after you take your rilpivirine. If you have any questions about how or when to take your medicine, ask your pharmacist.Your healthcare professionals may already be aware of this interaction and may be monitoring you for it. Do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any medicine before checking with them first.Reference:1.Edurant (rilpivirine) US prescribing information. Tibotec Pharmaceuticals June, 2013.
