I had my first seizure at 23 for no apparent reason. Dr's thought it was because I am a twin with some kind of scare tissue in lower left lobe of the brain. The medication Dilantin has worked well for me up until menopause. Because hormone therapy works through the liver, any benefits from that do not work at the maximum level. I had my first seizure at 16 & the drs. said it was due to overexposure to sunlight, but I was going through a divorce & ended up having to live my with my father which I knew really upset my mother...in short, I was stressed out. My next seizure was at the age of 38 and it was the day we(my fiance & I) found out his mother had a week to live(her liver had failed her due to alcoholism),now they've...

The drug interaction is what limits full benefits of other hormone therapy and vitamin B. I had to figure this out on my own b/c my dr and nurse practitiomer seemed limited on the interaction. It has been very frustrating dealing with hot flashes and night sweats along with no sleep and not being able to find hormone therapy that can work. I finally tested my blood for hormone level and am currently seeking biotherapy (hormone) for relief. Convincing Dr's to observe more closely women who are on dilantin while going through menapause has been my quest now that it happening to me! Note to all women going through the change of life and on any phenytoin,,, hormone therapy and phentoin counteract each other,,, it continues to be a hot night in Texas!Read More Read Less

I had my first seizure at 16 & the drs. said it was due to overexposure to sunlight, but I was going through a divorce & ended up having to live my with my father which I knew really upset my mother...in short, I was stressed out. My next seizure was at the age of 38 and it was the day we(my fiance & I) found out his mother had a week to live(her liver had failed her due to alcoholism),now they've put me on this medication...I suffer from extreme anxiety and now am even more terrified of going off this medication after reading the side effects and other comments.Since I have no insurance, it's hard for me to find a good dr. to help me. My friend is prescribed Xanax and that so far is the only thing that calms me down, stops my brain from going a million miles an hour, and keeps me at an even keel. Without it, I can't sit still for more than 20 minutes. I'm not sure if this seizure medication is working but now I'm terrified of going off it. I don't have seizures...it was due to stress. I work as an Executive chef and had to take a hiatus due to the demands of my job...everyday I'd walk out of there crying...do I need to be revaluated? I have a counselor who is agreeing with everything and can see for herself that I'm a classic case of a person who suffers from anxiety...I keep myself busy gardening, cooking, cleaning all day until I'm at the point of exhaustion and I still can't sleep at night. I know I need help but I can't afford therapists who charge $100's of dollars an hour. Talking about it doesn't help me, I need different meds and not any seizure medication.Read More Read Less

I have used phenytoin sodium as the generic version of Dilantin because it's much cheaper.I have had to go back to Dilantin because there is something lacking in the generic version. I will continue to have seizures if I take phenytoin. Has anyone else had this problem? I have taken Dilantin for 45 yrs. now.
