I have used Glucosamine HCl/MSM and been completely satisfied-for pain in the base thumb joints. Tried Glucosamine HCl/Chrondroitin/MSM and had tummy upset, while the other does not. There is also a Glucosamine Sulphate/MSM-am trying it now since it is cheaper.

I took glucosamine sulfate for about 30 years for general joint pain (knees and elbows). It completely eliminated the pain, which returned for a while when I quit taking it. Then glucosamine HCl was introduced and I began taking it and my joint pain returned. Since I've gone back to glucosamine sulfate, the pain has gone away.
