I had a colonoscopy on friday and drank the golytely the day before. It was a 4L jug and I was directed to drink 8 ounces every ten minutes. First thing I did was wake up early , mix it and put it in the fridge. They are right that it tastes better cold. I had it in there for over 8 hours. When it was time to drink the golytely I did two half glasses at a time. It was easier to gulp down. After th...

something horrible happened. i went for a routine outpatient colonoscopy. just before that i collapsed and almost died from acute renal failure. the " go-lightly " poisoned me, which was unprecedented according to all my doctors. we have recently cancelled the trip of a lifetime at huge financial cost. i am on dialysis 3 x a week. For my previous two colonoscopies, I was prescribed the dulcolax/miralax method, and while I don’t personally know anyone who enjoys drinking 64 oz of Gatorade within a span of a couple hours, it is so much preferable to my experience with golytely. I was fine for the first hour, despite the taste being sickening; however, then I began having extreme cramping and nausea. It lasted all through the night and I felt like I was having very little success in the “cleaning out” process. Then the next morning when I was instructed to drink the second half, I was immediately bombarded by nausea. There was more progress in the cleaning out but I was seriously having flashbacks to labor with regard to my pain. Then I started dry heaving incessantly—because there was nothing left I guess. I wasn’t even able to finish it.Read More Read Less

Product has a slimy consistency and unpleasant taste. Next time I will insist on the single use Gatorade and Miralax.

Immediately got shakes, dizziness, and coldness, then as I drank it turned to intense nausea, fatigue, and cramps in back/stomach. Eventually I threw up and didn't stop until all the solution was out of my stomach. While it technically did clear out my digestive system, it just did it through the wrong end. I follow all directions I was given by my doctor as closely as possible, so I'm not sure why I had such an unpleasant experience.

Golytely is nasty and using powder Gatorade does not help the taste. It still taste horrible. I would rather eat broken glass than put myself through that garbage again. It is not worth it.

To say I was very apprehensive about having this procedure done is an understatement. I used Golytely. There was a small dry lemon drink pack glued to the side of the bottle when I picked it up at the pharmacy. When the time came to start the much dreaded drinking part, I poured the liquid into a 16 oz glass and drank 8oz every 10 min. I marked off the outside of the glass with 2 oz increments. I started an hour before the recommended time. I think drinking small amounts is less stressful to your body. I can understand why people tend to drink the prep rapidly. It was rather unpleasant tasting, especially when you have to drink copious amounts. I've compared instructions on various Gastroenterology websites, and have found the information to be vague. Sucking on a lemon between sips and plugging my nose helped. I did get the chills, so I turned up the heat and put on a heavy jacket. The emptying of the bowels started an hour after I started drinking. I drank the remaining quart 12 hrs after the first, Since I was done 1 hr before the NPO or no liquid cut off time, I drank some ginger ale. I had my appt scheduled at 11am, so I was able to sleep for a few hrs after the 2nd round of bowl emptying. I did not experience any abdominal pain, just fullness. The bathroom part was no issue, kind of like peeing out of your rump. The exam itself was super easy, you get to take a very pleasant nap and get hydrated with an IV. In conclusion, although the biggest challenge was drinking the prep, the method of drinking in slow increments helped immensely. Read More Read Less

Science can develope a vaccine in less than one year. Do you think anyone can make an attempt to improve the taste of Golytely? The next time I will be using a different product unless improvements are made.

Most awful stuff! I've had it twice. Both times it made me weak and left me with a tremendous headache. I now, take Gatorade and miralax. It does just as well without the side affects.

If you are in relatively good health, don't believe all the horror stories. Perhaps the people who had horrendous experiences had other underlying problems. Obviously, the solution doesn't taste great, but it's not horrible if you mix the Golytely lemon packet with the solution. Just make sure it is cold and use a straw. Yes, the time required for colonoscopy Golytely prep is inconvenient and may prevent you from getting much sleep to finish the solution. Life isn't perfect! About half way through my first of two sessions (one the day before - 2hrs, and one the day of - 2hrs) I realized (in my life) I have actually drank a couple crappy sports drinks that tasted just as bad! Anyway, while you are camping out on the throne, watch videos on your phone, or bring something else to distract. Tedious, but not torture. Tips: I believe getting REALLY hydrated before the prep absolutely helps. Also, (if you can) drink a bit of water in-between solution doses. I prepared my doses of Golytely by pouring the solution into 16 empty 8oz plastic water containers. Quite convenient! I needed to drink one container approximately every 15 min. Sometimes a bit longer if I needed a bit more time. No big deal. One more tip: Try to finish your prep at least 3 hours BEFORE your ride to the hospital. Your movements should have stopped by then...unless you have other medical issues. In conclusion: No fun, but wasn't worth my stress as a "rookie."Read More Read Less

For those of you who are reading the directions and seeing all of these horrible side effects. Do not worry. I promise you, it is not as horrible as you might think. Before going into this, I was terrified - because after reading these reviews, I didn’t really know what to expect. Everything will be okay!! I’ve been horribly backed up for 9 days, my GI prescribed this to me, The solution will clean you right up and feeling better! Yes, the solution is a little yucky and after using the bathroom many times- my ass is SORE, it’s definitely bearable! Mix it with a little lemonade and make sure you have lots of clear liquids like apple juice, white grape juice, lemon-lime sodas, ginger ale and/or Gatorade (just make sure it’s not dyed with red, blue or purple.) you’ve got this and there’s nothing to be scared of!Read More Read Less

This stuff is downright nasty. It works real good but the taste is awful and to have to drink a little over a gallon in a short amount of time is not good. A day and a half latter everything I eat or drink tastes like Golytely. When my next colonoscopy is due I will take my chances and do without unless something better is offered.

I don’t understand the problem people have with GoLytely. It tastes like weak salt water and not difficult to drink. That said, I wouldn’t drink it by choice but I’ve had much worse. In fact, bourbon is worse, much worse.

Love how another reviewer talked about texture…it is so odd. It reminds me a bit of a clear viscous motor oil. This prep has been around for ages and while it does work well, getting the volume down given the odd texture is tough. I kept sipping sprite halfway through and biting on pieces of peppermint gum…then I would gargle after each portion to help get the ‘film’ off my teeth. Worry about how folks who are truly ill manage. Surely has to be a better way!

I was told by my pharmacist To mix the prep with some sugar free lemonade mix, add water and put it in the fridge overnight. I used crystal light mix and it made it very palatable

I'm in the middle of taking this prep and will NEVER use it again. There has to be something else to take. I'll NEVER be able to drink the 4 litres and hopefully, my test will not be compromised. This is sheer torture drinking this slimy liquid. I have to keep a cold glass of plain water to sip on in between drinking the prep. Horrible!

Yes this product achieved the desired result but getting a gallon of this evil liquid is pure Hell! It tastes like soapy salt water with a hint of lemon. Trying to choke down 8 oz of any liquid every 15 minutes is hard to do. But this stuff is just torture! I will never take it again!

I will share that if you have the option go with Moviprep instead of GoLYTELY. I've was dreading this procedure because of the GoLytely prep. I read all the reviews of options and moviprep was an alternative. My fear was that maybe it could be worse! Can anything actually be worse than the gallon of GoLYTELY? I took the chance. The Good: It's half the liquid! The Bad: It cost $70. not formulary. Result: It was definitely worth it. It was manageable and I won't dread the next one as much now that I have this option.Read More Read Less

Although this medication (I guess) did what it’s meant to... it was one of my worst experiences. It sure did empty my bowels. And my stomach. I couldn’t keep the solution down no matter what I tried- I vomited more times and more volume than I ever have in my adult life. It also gave me fever, chills, sever cramping, dizziness and I almost collapsed in the shower this morning after being up all night vomiting from this vile solution. It’s easily the worst thing I’ve ever drank. It’s painful. It won’t stay down. And if it does, it feels like fire on its way back out. 0/10 I will NEVER take this again for a prep. It’s like that scene in Harry Potter where Dumbledore is drinking from the goblet and he begs Harry not to make him drink bc he’d rather die... that was me at 3am today. Read More Read Less
