Like all MG drugs, (and probably many others), one CANNOT TAKE IT ON AN EMPTY STOMACH! If taken on an empty stomach, it can lead to stomach cramps, etc.! (To those experiencing this: ask your MDs! It's right there in the med. literature!) Mestinon gives me energy...but also MUCH MUCUS! (Ulgh!) This is due to the BROMIDE in it! They once had Mestinon CHLORIDE available--I took it, less mucus! But ...

I had had difficulty getting out of a chair after 3PM for over 2 years, but my workdays ended at 6pm and it would take an hour after work to gather up my things and get in my car. I was too tired to walk into the kitchen for supper. Why I put up with this so long, I can't say. But I had been noticing upper leg weakness for 2-3 summers - to dig a hole to plant in, I stopped using the shovel and had to sit on the ground and use a hand tool - even thought about being tested for MG, since my mother has it - then one day on the way home from work, there were two identical cars coming to me from the left side on the way out of my work parking lot. Everything on the left was double and merged as it came to the middle. I saw an ophthalmologist who examined me and said it must be myasthenia gravis. She ordered a few initial tests, then I saw a neurologist which agreed and I was surprised at just how easily my upper legs wilted when he tested my strength. My initial blood tests were all negative as was my EMG, but the single fiber nerve test was abnormal. Since then, one of my blood tests has become abnormal. I tried 60mg Mestinon every 4 hours for 4 doses a day for a few weeks without improvement, then tried 1.5 tablets which didn't help either. When I went to 2 tablets every 4 hours, wow! It took a day or so and my 3 o'clock weak-legged blues went away, and my double vision was better, especially if I got enough sleep. What I traded improvement for was the frequent urgent trips to pee or poo, and I didn't always get to my destination on time. I started 'eating' Imodium, finally taking 4 alternating with 2 every morning after a shower - 20+ tablets a week, but the urgent urinating was now worse. I went thru urinal bags like crazy - very hard when you have to quit pumping gas, jump into your car and find an empty part of the parking lot to drop trou behind the wheel and squirm to pee in a public lot, much of which went actually into the urine bag. My urologist put me on Myrbetriq, which helped some after a few months. My neurologist added Robinul which also helped at the expense of a terribly dry mouth. So in order to tolerate 8 Mestinon ("Mess a Lot") tablets a day, I had to take 2 or 4 Imodium tablets, 1 myrbetriq, and 1.5 Robinul tablets in 3 doses every day. God forbid I forget an Imodium dose - two days minimum in diapers even with makeup doses of Imodium and quitting conversations to run to the bathroom. I now have a bathroom 'friend' I call Jimmah Roid, who shows himself with every missed dose of Imodium now. Taking Mestinon every 4 hours working in a medical clinic doesn't happen, but once I took one dose 2 hours late, then took the next one 2 hours afterwards to get back on schedule and enjoyed 2 good days of diapers and running to the bathroom to sit and sit and sit even with my Imodium. They could use 2 doses of 2 Mestinon tablets for a prep for a colonoscopy. Two weeks ago, after a hamstring tendon injury one morning caused me to miss my 4 Imodium tablet dose, I hopped painfully to the bathroom 6 times a day using my cane for 2 days. I've now been on Cellcept full dose for 2-3 months, so I cut my own Mess-a-lot to 1 tablet 4 times a day yesterday. If my weakness comes back, I might choose to retire rather than take 8 tablets of medication just for side effects daily and still have to wear diapers and excuse myself with my dry mouth in the middle of conversations. I guess I'm a miserable, fed-up kind of much-better.Read More Read Less

I WAS BORN IN 1941. I WAS DIAGNOSED WITH MG WHEN IN MY MID 30'S, SHORTLY BEFORE MY THIRD CHILD WAS BORN. THANKFULLY MY GP WAS ON THE BALL AND DIAGNOSED IT IMMEDIATELY. HE SEND ME TO PROFESSOR REEF AT THE JOHANNESBURG GENERAL HOSPITAL IN SOUTH AFRICA. HIS TEAM DID A THYMECTOMY ON ME. THE MG HAD BEEN OUT OF CONTROL. AFTER THE THYMECTOMY I WAS MUCH MORE STABLE. I NOW TAKE 1 60MG MESTINON EVERY FOUR HOURS DURING THE DAY. I SOMETIMES START TAKING THEM IN THE EARLY HOURS OF THE MORNING IF I FEEL I CANNOT BREATH PROPERLY.Read More Read Less

Had been suffering the effects of undiagnosed myasthenia gravis for five months (double vision, problems chewing, slurred speech). After a severe episode brought me to the hospital and to a team of neurologists it was diagnosed and treated. Symptoms and problems were gone in hours. That was three weeks ago. As far as I'm concerned, this drug worked Miracles.

Just started using mestinon made by Zydus, today. I had to increase my dose because it doesn't seem to be working as well. I had been using mestinon by Impax without problems.

I have been taking this medication for about 9 years. Within 3 hours of taking the first dose the improvement was remarkable. I was on the extend tabs but just recently my insurance has refused to pay for the tabs and I had to go to liquid form. I am not a fan. With either pill or liquid form I often get diarrhea and I drool at night but this is a small price to pay for relief of my symptoms.

I have been taking this medication for over 17 years. I am 35 years old now. The worse thing about this medication is it made my teeth fall out. Now I am at a loss as to what to do and where to go from here.

I was diagnosed withMG in 2002 at first I started taking it liquid form every 4 hours but now as I'm older it's only 3x a day or every 6 hours, I'd say this medicine has been very effective but some of the side effects that I've had with this medication has been many leg cramps and muscle spams which isn't that bad what I don't see much improvement on the dropping of eyelid sometimes it helps but not much.

I was, I believe, wrongly diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis in July 2014 and given Mestinon. I was extremely sick for the first week of taking Mestinon, but the double vision which first appeared in May 2014 didn't seem so bad. I continued taking the drug until June 2015. Every test for Myasthenia, came back clear including brain scans, chest scans, blood tests and electrodes in my arms, legs and forehead. When I first started taking mestinon, I overdosed by taking half a tablet at 9am and then another half at 1pm.I was so sick. By January, I was taking six or more every day. My double vision was there all the time bar maybe an hour daily. I was nauseous, shaky, rashes all over my body, watery eyes, and weak legs and arms that were in a complete spasm day and night. In June 2015 I stopped taking mestinon against the doctors advice. My knuckles started contracting as if I had the onset of arthritis, and I could hardly walk without falling over. Nine months later and I'm getting better daily. My knuckles don't hurt anymore, and I can walk without the fear of falling. I still have double vision every morning but prisms on my glasses sort that out within seconds. If the double vision comes at night it is because I am tired. BE 100% SURE OF A DIAGNOSIS BEFORE TAKING MESTINON. My only problem was double vision and I ended up with so many other problems.Read More Read Less

I have been on this drug since 1993. At first (6 mos) the muscle spasms were wild. After that, the body absorbed easily and fatigue eased. I take 60mg in the morning with food, 2-3 PM and before I go to sleep. I sleep for 6-7 hours regularly.

I have been on Mestinon for 3 weeks. I have had some strange reactions to it. I have decreased appetite. I have also not been able to eat eggs that are not baked into something, tortilla/corn chips and most spic foods. Any of these foods combined with the meds, I get a headache and become dizzy. When I first began taking the meds, I had stomach cramps, leg cramps and nausea. After increasing my dosage from 30 mg 2x per day to 3x per day, the symptoms lessened and disappeared. I now only experience fatigue and eye twitching. Read More Read Less

I have been diagnosed with MG since 1995. Main issues are with vision. However, sometimes experience muscle fatigue. I avoid taking at night as it disrupts my sleep with muscle twitching and stomach cramps. What works best for me is a 2 60mg tabs first thing in the morning. Followed by a 180mg Timespan. Also, don't forget to eat. Large dose at once will cause stomach cramps. However, I find this gives me a good boost to offset most symptoms during the work day. I add an additional 60mg TAB late afternoon if I experience double vision or severe drooping eyelid. MG is a little different for each person, this is what works best for me. It takes time to adjust to this medication. (You're body will adjust over time)Read More Read Less

I have muscle cramping...severe pains in the stomach....and diarrhea. I am only on it a week so am hopeful the side effects will lesson with time. The side effects are a bit scarey. I experience double vision, trouble swallowing, and I choke a lot on my saliva. This med hasn't improved those symptoms much.

Suggested dose every 5 hours. Started at 5pm had severe stomach cramps and diarrhea by 6:30. Second dose at 10pm up several times through the night with diarrhea and cramps. Woke at 7am took 3rd dose. By 8:30 I had lost control of my tongue and could barely speak which I found out was an allergic reaction. The treatment was worse than the symptoms of the disease.

Been on generic Mestinon-Pyridostimine for several years, after taking Mytelase for a longtime. Mytelase worked much better for me but caused extreme constipation, that is why a doctor recommended pyridostigmine was taking 30mg three times a day. I developed acid reflux and was put on a few different anti-acid meds, found one that worked called Dexilant, but this was disallowed by my insurance coverage, so am now on Prevacid, it is ok! with my doctors permission I was able to stop pyridostigmine for a while, but my myastina became bad and I was hospitilazed over night. I need mytelase but have been told it is no longer available. Read More Read Less

I began with liquid Mestinon at 1/4 dose ( 15mg ) 3 x day and worked up slowly to a full dose of 60mg 3x day. I was having trouble waking up exhausted so my doc added the Timespan Mestinon that is 180mg and lasted for 12 hours. To the three doses I take. The dose of 60 mg lasts only 4 hrs. Doc says and suggests this routine : 60 mg....... at. 8am....12 noon......and finally at 4 pm. Then I take the Timespan at say 9pm. This is working well. Double vision ,drooping eye , and extreme fatigue much improved. I still do tire but immensely better than before. I do get some GI symptoms but mostly I SWEAT a lot. That has been my worse symptom.Read More Read Less
