only the band name pfizer works for me. now they have put it in a plastic bottle after their merger and i can't use it because of allergies. no warning changed bottle 10/20. i thought the fda had to allow 1 to 5 years for a transference off this drug. i've used it since 27. best drug going. i also question the safety of it in plastic bottles because of leeching materials into the drug. anybody test that like to see the data. great drug big mistake putting it into plastic. looks like a class action suit but it wouldn't help me or others. change the bottle back'Read More Read Less

I've been taking Dilantin for almost 30 years. Yes, when taken as prescribed, I have no seizures. It's the only medication that has worked for me. But, it comes with horrible side effects. I have gingival hyperplasia, swollen lymph nodes, depression, anxiety, and I'm constantly tired. Not to mention, trying to concentrate is almost impossible. All this being said, it's still better than having seizures. Some would last for 30 or more minutes and it took days to feel "normal" again. I suppose one has to weigh the good with the bad and choose which option is best for them. For me, the good outweighs the bad. There was nothing worse for me than seeing my daughter's terrified face when I woke from my seizures. Read More Read Less

I went into a horrible depression from this medication and lost the hair on my face, eyebrows and eyelashes. As soon as I was switched to a different medication my depression was gone within weeks and my eyebrows and eyelashes grew back.

I have taken Dilantin since I was 16 years old. I am now 82. Later primodin and neurortin were added. I had few side effects and few break through but remember all Seizers are different. Everyone should have a GOOD neurologist and have your blood level check every six months. Mayo clinic was the place I got the most help. I have my BS and MA. Taught school for 27 years. Have hope and stay strong. If you have break through, see a good neurologist!.

Started having seizures at age 13. Have been utilizing this medication ever since. 30 years later I can confidently tell that as long as I take meds as prescribed I have not had a seizure. Over 10 years without a seizure! Still, always concerned that will someday change but so far so good. Side effects: Often drowsy, hard to concentrate.

This is a Miracle drug for me. I was having cognitive problems, along with severe muscle cramping, and nerve pain. Diagnosed with seizures. After taking my first dose, I literally felt the two halves of my brain divide, and I was able to think in stereo again. It was a WOW effect. However dosage is problematic, too much causes hallucinations, too little, seizures. I take 200 to 260mg per day & only name brand, no generics.

Sudden onset of tonic clonic seizures in 1996 at age 34. After 6 months on Dilantin attempted physican directed cessation of drug. Seizures began again. Have been on the same dose from the beginning - 460mg daily.

i took the generic form of this drug phenyltoin. I was prescribed this drug after having what i was told was a tonic-clonic seizure not due to epilepsy prior to what led to the discovery and resection of a frontal, left lobe tumor. I took this drug for a period of 6 months to prevent any further seizures. the seizures were well controlled and i experienced no noticeable side effects from this drug - well controlled meaning i did not have any seizures that I know of. after 6 months my neurologist changed drugs due to there still being seizure activity by eeg and the possible side effects of liver damage from long term use of this drugRead More Read Less

I was recently diagnosed with epilepsy after suffering 4 seizures in 14 months. After having an allergic reaction to tegretol, I was recently placed on dilantin. While it so far seems effective as far as stopping seizures, the side effects are somewhat bothersome. I become very tired, suffer dry mouth and lips, and suffer from some confusion. All in all the effectiveness seems to outweigh the side effects at this point.

I am taking this with Keppra as well but the dilantin is awful for me. I am hoping my neurologist will let me go off of it when I see her later this week.

Have been on Dilantin almost 20 years, no seizures in 18 years, praise God! And that one seizure was sue to my forgetting to take it during vacation. Easy to take because can take full dosage at once, no having to remember to take later.

Drug made me numb at first, I noticed I was in a stare often. Started on this for neuro leg pain, they are wanting me to wean off Lamictal and take the full dosing of this but as I've read this drug decreases the levels of Lamictal making it harder to get off the Lamictal, the doctors are not educated on this.
