Relpax is the only abortive medication that has worked for me. It's tricky because you have to take it at the first sign of a migraine, and it won't work if the migraine has already started. Insurance only covers 4 tablets a month, and since they're around $40 per tablet, it's hard to decide if each headache is worth treating with the expensive pill. I have suffered from migraines all my life and have tried too many narcotics, daily preventative meds, and triptans to list, and none have been as effective as relpax. It has been like a miracle drug for me. I do have to take it before the migraine gets too severe though because then I begin a hellish 12 to 16 hour period of vomiting (at least 4 episodes of vomiting each hour, each exacerbating my already severe pain) before my migraine subsides. During that time, I'm naturally incapable of keeping anything down. I hear that vomiting actually signals the end many people's migraine attacks. I wish that were the case for me. My first episode of vomiting is merely a signal that I've reach my pain-level peak which will now sustain itself for another 12-16 hours! My only complaint about relpax is the extreme sleepiness and fatigue I experience several hours after taking it and which lasts all day. Nevertheless, I'll take that any time over the severe and sustained pain of a migraine! I pray that no serious side affects (endangering my life) are discovered with years of sustained use. I am 48 and take 5 to 6 monthly, and have done so for about 5 years.
