I had my gallbladder removed in February 2014. I had the "dumping syndrome" before gallbladder was removed, and even worse afterwards. Nothing seemed to help. After being prescribed Colestipol, I feel that I can actually get out of the house and not have to worry about my next bathroom stop. My DR. prescribed 1 tablet 2x daily, but I found that this was causing some unfavorable constipation. I wen...

I am Bipolar and my doctor prescribed this medication for diarhea. This medication is horrible, it went against all my other medication and I went into a Manic Bipolar Stage. It is terrible what I put my parents and son through. I am 46 years old and would never recommend this to anyone.

I was giving this drug to help controll loose bowels. I took it for two days as directed and started feeling bad so I stopped. The 4th day after the 1st pill I started getting severe cramps and was very sick to my stomach. I fought through this from about 7:00 pm of that evening through the night into the next day. About 1/2 way through the night the vomiting and diarrhea. Needless to say I have a full months perscription that is going into the trash.

Gallbladder removed 16 years ago. I have suffered with chronic diarrhea -after meals for all this time. I finally explained my symptoms to my gastroenterologist who explained that while most patients recover completely after gallbladder removal--meaning their system returns to "normal function", some patients do not--meaning their system is not able to "reabsorb" as it should. He prescribed Colestipol /2 tablets per day. I began the regiment 4 days ago and I cannot believe the difference this had made in my life! My husband and I have been out to eat twice, we've been on day trip and I was just fine. All the years other people shared that they suffered the same symptoms after their surgery and were just miserable. It would have been helpful had my surgeon explained that if chronic symptoms continued, there could be a simple solution. I have my schedule down pat now with my other medications and OTC's so their absorption will not be hindered. Thank you to my Gastro and for this life changing medication! Read More Read Less

Got my gallbladder removed nearly two years ago as of writing this. I had been struggling with diarrhea and constant unpredictable bathroom breaks since I got it out. Around a year ago I was prescribed colestipol which I take 2 of twice a day. It's done absolute wonders for me and has absolutely improved my quality of life. Main problem I've run into is constipation on 2 pills 2 times a day. Going with one pill twice a day resolved this for me. If you're suffering from bile acid malabsorption after you got your gallbladder removed, I could not reccomend this medication enough.Read More Read Less

I have used Questran for years due to Gallbladder removal & Dumping Syndrome with IBS-D. I take Colestipol horse pills after supper. I go from Constipation back to Diarrhea & the pain is aweful. I have more pain from the burning & straining also after straining I get blood. I am retired & just want to go out for walks or church or dinner & the movies. Due to this I am nervous to date & am alone. I use to travel but don't dare cause of diarrhea. Makes me house bound which is no way to live.

I take the powder form, not the pill form, from small packets. I have a fistula on my anus from Crohn’s Disease, which is scary if I were to become constipated. This product makes my life bearable, reducing diarrhea greatly, but I learned early on that if you still have a problem with constipation, you can lower the dosage until you get the right dose that works for you. For example, my prescription reads to take two packets of this powder each day. But I lowered it myself, and I do great on only 1/2-packet each day! Don’t be afraid to listen to your body and adjust accordingly. Been doing this for the last three years, after I developed a large non-cancerous tumor when I was using, and blamed on the Questran. It almost killed me it was so large. After my tumor surgery I immediately left Questran (Cholestyramine) and thank God I found this Colestipol medication. It works great!! Thank God. I got my life back!Read More Read Less

the pills disintegrate. it is awful. the pharmacist is useless and tells me it is due to "moisture"....but we have close to 20 medications in this household and this is the only one that splits open and falls a part into dust. This has been ongoing for 6 months. I have contacted Amneal the manufacturer but have not received any help. we are discontinuing use.

Prescribed for long term chronic diarrhea post gallbladder removal. In addition to diverticular disease and IBS I have had bouts of chronic diarrhea since having my gallbladder removed (needlessly, IMO) almost 9 years ago. This has been the most effective treatment thus far and has restored some normalcy to my life. I was initially prescribed (9 years ago) Cholestyramine (Questran) but had an allergic reaction to it. I wish I had known this drug was an option then.

I've actually been taking this med for several years. I have a high output ileostomy and was prescribed this to try and slow motility. I take 1mg 4 times a day. Haha - kinda works. One manufacturer uses a coating that makes it very difficult to actually absorb the med and first the first time in over 5 yrs my pharmacy is carrying the other brand and I'm still only seeing marginal difference. I also take Dicyclomine 20mg 4 times a day to try and slow motility - I have a lazer output. The only thing that works, in connection with the above, is taking bulking fiber with my meds using applesauce. Read More Read Less

I have bile reflux and this drug has worked wonders! It completely stopped the vomiting I was struggling with! The only downfall is the size.

After several years using cholestyramine to control severea diarrhea I switched to colestipol because it is much lower cost and easier to take. Works as good or better.

Colestipol saved my life from severe bile reflux!! From throwing up multiple times throughout the night to one maybe twice a week is a huge accomplishment for me after fighting with GIs for a year! Although it sometimes causes constipation and weakness from not absorbing the vitamins in your body, I would 100% recommend if your having trouble with bile or fats being processed out!

My doctor prescribed 2 GM twice a day for high cholesterol about 3 weeks ago. I have IBS, gallbladder removed 20 yrs ago. I also take 2 antidepressants in the morning along with Vit D and noticed after 2 weeks of taking Colestipol that my depression had returned. I assume due to interference of absorption of my antidepressants. I have discontinued my morning dose of Colestipol for 4 days now and feel that my depression is subsiding. I have yet to have my cholesterol level checked since taking Colestipol, so I don't know how effective it is in treating high cholesterol. It has not effected my IBS one way or the other, but I have learned to control that with diet and not leaving home in the morning until after my bowel movement.Read More Read Less

Unlike others, I have a very loose stool and have to be near a bathroom in the am. It stops me from walking in the mornings and must be very careful if I have to pass gas. Going to ask Dr. to find something else, can't take statins, what's left ?

I had gallbladder removed 1.5 years ago. Before I was struggling with IBS-D and it did not go away...probably got worse. I was on this for about 2 months and became bloated and constipated. When I went off it, that did not go away, so it must be from something else. I'm back on it because I can't handling the dumping 4-5 times a day anymore, especially away from home. Hope more fibre can ease the bloating over time...any suggestions?

I struggled for a long time with stomach problems. They diagnosed me with IBS. I had my gallbladder removed after having my daughter. Afterwards I kept getting chronic diarrhea after every little thing I ate. The stomach pain was awful. Now I take 1 GM of Colestipol Micronized every day and I am fine. The only time I have had stomach pain since then is from eating too much or eating a lot of fatty foods.
