This drug saved my life! I was losing weight due to cancer. I had dropped 72 pounds over the course of 5 weeks. My onocologist suggested this drug and it has reversed the appetite loss; I'm now gaining weight and my strength.

I was on this medication for 21 months for endometrial stromal sarcoma. I have two tumors growing in the recto-vaginal wall. The medicine was supposed to shrink them however all it did was slow their growth. I had terrible side effects: gained 25-30 pounds, crazy mood swings, serious depression, and high blood pressure. I have to have a partial hysterectomy now anyway so I wish I would have ne...

Went through menopause 9 years ago and started bleeding again. Diagnosed with multiple fibroids. Had surgery to explore. Was expected to bleed afterwards for 2 weeks. After 4 weeks I contacted the doctor and she put me on 40 mg once a day. Stopped the bleeding. In fact I missed a doseage and started bleeding the next day. INcreased libido, increased appetite but NO weight gain. I will need a hysterectomy but will stay on this until then. It's worked wonderfully for me!

I started 40mg once a day for heavy bleeding due to atleast 10 fibroids and anemia. At first it was great. I even felt it improved my mood. Then I started with hot flashes, increased Blood Pressure, and weight gain. I took myself down to 20 mg and BP became normal, but now I am having a heavy period again. I am trying to decide which to chose Anemia or elevated Blood Pressure while I await a hysterectomy.

After my biopsy, there was no cancer found but because of my age 67, and my history of bleeding for multiple years, the thickness of the lining of my uterus my Gyn suggested I see a gynecological oncologist. This doc put me on Megace 20mg taken 2 x a day. I have EVER SIDE EFFECT listed under the side effects. I have clots bigger than a 50 cent piece or larger, I STARTED BLEEDING on 7/10/22 AND ON 8/15/22 I AM STILL BLEEDING LIKE A 22 YEAR OLD,mental health issues, EVERY SIDE AFFECT. I take a blood thinner but I don't understand such clotting. I went on a visit to this doc and informed him of my quality of life change while on this med and he said to me "I need for you to continue taken this medication until we get you scheduled for surgery, we'll try to get it scheduled in maybe October" and it is now 8/15/22. I have so much more to say but I don't think this medication is safe for everyone especially at my age and not for me. He may be medically smart but I know my body better than any man doctor and this medication is shutting my body completely down..Read More Read Less

I have taken Megastrol for about 8 yrs due to bleeding for 2-3 months non-stop, heavy and large blood-clots; and jus stopped it 2 1/2 months ago without Dr advice. While taking it I had no periods at all. However, after stopping, I started spotting today, not sure if it's jus my body adjusting to not taking it anymore or if I should be concerned. Any advice would be appreciated. I didn't notify my Dr because I'm not sure he would represcribe it again since he didn't prescribe it originally and kept telling me to stop taking it, but I was afraid to at the time. I stopped to find out if I am in menopause since I am 47 yrs old and was told I was prescribed it for excessive bleeding due to perimenopause 8 yrs ago. Not sure if I should start back taking it again or wait longer to see if the spotting stops or gets worse. PS- I couldn't find on WebMD where to ask medical professionals, so not sure if it's still available or not since I haven't been on here for years. Read More Read Less

I am 45 yrs old and apparently going through peri-menopause. I have been skipping periods but in May started bleeding excessively, soaking a pad and tampon every hour and passing very large clots. This lasted for 10 days till I became dizzy and lethargic and ended up in the ER. My hemoglobin had dropped so low I almost required a transfusion. My doctor prescribed Megace to stop the bleeding and they have scheduled me for a uterine ablation, hoping to avoid a hysterectomy if possible. The medication has worked and the bleeding has completely stopped. I must stay on it until the procedure. I am noticing some side affects, including mood changes, increased appetite and decreased libido. Luckily I am only on it temporarily. Read More Read Less

I was 37 when I was diagnosed with endometrial cancer. It was in a very early stage, so to preserve the uterus and avoid hysterectomy, I decided to follow a hormone treatment, which consisted 80 mg Megace (oral) twice every day. The medication did not create too much tangible effects on me: no change in appetite, slight change in mood maybe, actually a decrease in facial oil which totally cleaned the acne problem. But my periods which were perfectly regular up to that point became chaotic, I had no period for three months and later, continuous spotting, arbitrary bleedings, blood clots, etc. My endometrial lining thickness decreased from almost 20 mm, which is not normal I know, to a few mm in six months, which was what we wished to achieve. However, the little fibroids which accompanied me all through my life (or the part of it monitored with ultrasound) started to grow all together at a very fast pace during the same time, which my gyno related to the increased progestin intake. Eventually I had the hysterectomy to be on the safe side (no cancer was found in the final biopsy of the uterus). Read More Read Less

Initially the drug caused me pretty wicked insomnia and i just couldn't sleep no matter what. After being on it for a while that problem has lessened. I take 20 mg 4X day and have managed to keep my weight steady. Had initial big appetite increase but that has leveled off also. Staying on it a while has helped with some of the unwanted side effects....so far. I alternate this with Tamoxifen every 3 weeks. Been on it since Feb 2015.

put on 10ml. twice a day to increase appetite and gain weight. Gained weight and felt marvelous with much energy and pep. I am 79 years old. After 5 days on it the second time I went on it I got very nervous and jittery. I decreased dose and hope that I can regain pep and energy and appetite again this way.

I was put on megace after 20 days of bleeding and at day 23 I was still bleeding some. Then on day 24 I started having cramps and started heavy bleeding again. I see my doctor in a couple days and I am just so frustrated, I am hoping that something can be figured out!

It is my understanding that must cancer patients expire from malnutrition. Well this stuff works for loss of appitite, I eat everything left over in the refreigator and I am gaining my weight back.

My oncologist gave this to me for complex atypical endometrial hyperplasia (detected early), however, they could not rule out cancer when they first found it. When I had my D&C I was taking this for about 2 weeks. I am on a low dose, 80mg/day. My pathology results after my D&C WAS VASTLY IMPROVED (and no cancer!) and I feel the Megace has something to do with that. As for side effects I haven't had a pimple for almost 2 months now, my hair doesn't get greasy anymore (that's strange maybe but it's true), I get a cramp every few days, and sex is totally NOT interesting. Appetite is still normal, though. I strongly suggest taking this medicine despite the side effects!!!Read More Read Less

I am 47 and always maintained a weight of 105. When I had an appetite loss and dropped to 98lb I was devastated. My doctor put me on megace so I could gain some weight and it worked. I am so pleased to now weigh 125. I am a diabetic for 31 yrs. My side affects have been hair lose, vaginal itch, increased blood pressure and high blood sugar. Overall I am so satisfied with the weight gain that I deal with the side affects. I only take 1 to 2 dose a week to cut down on the side affects and that is enough to still give me an appetite to eat. Without it I have no appetite and have to force myself to eat just to compensate my insulin intakeRead More Read Less

I have only been on this medication for a few days. I have been having a period for over five months, and was repeatedly told it was a reaction to my deprovara (which I have been taking for sometime, and have NEVER had this reaction with before). Shrugged off and sent on my merry little way, a month ago went to the ER due to extremely heavy bleeding and put on Reclipsen to regulate my hormones, diagnosed with dysfunctional uterine bleeding and once again patted on the head and sent on my merry little way. Last week when on the placebo's for the reclipsen, I finally stopped bleeding for two whole days then started again. I was admitted on wednesday to the hospital for a blood transfusion, and given the two choices of ablation and a hysterectomy, to solve my issues. Until then I was given a D&C and was told by my doctor that it was to stop my bleeding during the two weeks before the hysterectomy. I started bleeding once again yesterday morning, after less than 24 hours after the D&C, went back to the ER about it. The doctor I saw there prescribed the Megace/Megestrol 40 mg tablets. Since then I've had extreme diarrhea, lighted headedness, what feels like pressure on my chest, and between my weigh in yesterday and today somehow gained 7 lbs. I would have to say, be VERY LEERY about taking this medication. The side effects, aren't worth any potential benefits, as I've been doing this medication for two days and still bleeding. I am going to be refusing to take this medication after today again. Until I can speak to my own doctor, or a different on call doctor for my doctor's office.Read More Read Less
