I have been on this drug for Bipolar 1 condition for over twenty years. I take a very low dose, 25mg-50mg per day, to make me sleep. At first it made me groggy and gave me nasal congestion, but after I got used to it, I would not trade it for any of the newer drugs. It always puts me to sleep and I wake up rested. It was also the only drug other than Zyprexa to control my mania, but Zyprexa lit...

I was put on this drug when I was 10 years old 30mg in the morning 60mg at night.i was a out of control child but I never had schizophrenia, I ended up taking an overdose on purpose luckily I survived but I can't get it out of my head why put a 10yo on such a powerful drug.after the suicide attempt they put in a psych hospital then in a boys home I am 55yo and I perfectly fine the problem I have they still misdiagnosis children some children just need to be stimulated.

In 1975, I got free psychotherapy at Penn State's Student Health Center for depression related to chronic kidney disease (CKD) and childhood sx. abuse ca age 11. (I was transitioning from victim to survivor, but couldn't stop the really bad dreams.) At the time I was suicidal, so I knew I needed help, but the Center didn't allow students to consult their psychotherapists without consulting 1st with a psychiatrist. The PSU psychiatrist I was assigned to immediately put me on Elavil (to elevate my mood) and Mellaril (for depression). Within 1 week, I started experiencing horrible side-effects, including extreme hyperactivity, nervous tics, sleeplessness and night terrors. The mellaril never helped me sleep. One time, I stayed awake for 2.5 days, then crashed in the next afternoon and slept for over 14 hours. I was babbling to myself crazily at times! On the 2nd sleepless night, I wrote about the sleeplessness & the agonized feelings I was experiencing in my diary (the psychotherapist asked me to keep a diary about my depressive/suicidal thoughts & emotions/feelings. I remember reading my diary notes after I woke up, and being shocked that the writings didn't look like mine. I sounded like a totally crazy person ... my scribblings made no sense! That was when I realized the mellaril was making me worse, not better. The next time I visited my psychotherapist, I told him about the side-effects & that I had to stop taking the mellaril. He said I couldn't keep going to the free counseling sessions if I stopped taking the mellaril without the psychiatrist's permission. I told him if I had to keep taking it to keep seeing him, I would keep paying for the mellaril, then go home & flush it down the toilet. He said, "If you do that, don't tell me about it." So, that was what started to do. Immediately, I got much better, despite my severe depression. Eventually, I got some Xanax/diazepam to help with the anxiety & sleeplessness. - Dr. MORead More Read Less

I was put on Mellaril when I was 12 years old and kept on it until I was 18 (when I could decide for myself if I wanted to discontinue the drug) and these are the side effects I had: Breast discharge (continues to this day; I'm 52), persistent heart palpitations (continues to this day), chronic fatigue (continues to this day), insulin resistance and later, irreversible diabetes (diagnosed at 30 years old with diabetes), unrelenting depression (I have only had about 8 days since age 12 not depressed, occurring one day at a time over the years) and this persistent depression cannot be treated with any available antidepressant at all), lifelong hormone imbalances coinciding with beginning this drug, orthostatic hypotension while using Mellaril ( I thank God that this side effect stopped when I got off this terrible, life-altering drug), falling asleep at school, permanent sense of smell problem (to this day I often smell something burning when nobody else does), pituitary issues resulting in permanent blank face and difficulty smiling (I have to consciously force my face to smile), neuropathy, nerve issues involving thumbs suddenly feeling like they have been struck with something and instantly bending at the joint simultaneously. These are the worst side effects I experienced.Read More Read Less

I was misdiagnosed by a quack that gave Mellaril to all his patients and also diagnosed most with schizophrenia . I was young then and I know it damaged my prostate . As I aged ( twenties ) I began to have severe unrinary issues that the urologist tied to this drug . As time passed I continued to have pain in the prostate chronically . I am now older and retired amd I knew one day this drug would weaken my prostate to where cancer would invade which it has . This drug is poison in many ways . I have listed just one of the ways Read More Read Less

It was also the only drug other than Zyprexa to control my mania, but Zyprexa literally made me gain a pound a week, until I had to discontinue it to lose weight. Now I take Abilify instead of the Zyprexa and have found a perfect balance. I would recommend this drug to anyone with mania that is difficult to control, or anyone with severe sleep disorders. Make sure you realize that it will take you about six weeks to get used to the drug...it's very strong and is literally made to knock you out cold, which is why it works great when I take it only at night before I go to bed. I have never had any sort of heart problems, even with hard exercise, whereas Seroquel made my heart skip beats when I exercised and scared the hell out of me.Read More Read Less

I took mellaril for approximately 3 months. It definately helped me to sleep, sort of helped my mood swings, not really any adverse side effects other than occassional heart palipitations, but were short lived and not severe. But I didn't think I needed such a powerful medication for my condition, (sleeplessness, mild mood swings, anxiety, panic attacks).

umm heart dmg ? i was put on this drug while in a mental hospital all i really remember was when they first put me on it i just slept then one day they took me to the er and done what i think was an ekg. i was 10 or 11 when they done this to me i remember very lil from when i was 10 up to 13. my mom use to always joke about how when i came back home i was just a zombie she said i would go to school come home and just sit on the couch and stare at the tv rather it was on or not. i dnt even remember any thing about school or friends back then. i was also on paxill and some other drug. i was admitted to the mental hospital for anger management problems and they just zombified me and sent me home. my mom finally took me off all the meds when i started to have black outs and couldnt remember what time or day it was. i had severe withdrawals for 3 months while she slowly took me off the meds. i am now 25 and some times have sharp pains in my chest this has happend since i think i was 14 or 15. i have very explosive anger problems and some anxiety issues and all the quacks will give me is anti depression meds. could me being on such a powerful drug for 2-3 yrs caused my decline in mental stability ? and is heart problems common with this and how severe are they ? im sry for the long wall of text but after reading some reviews i felt i need to have this out there. oh yeah and i was on 75mg( or something like that) twice a day in a liquid form cause i couldn't swallow pills very good. in 1973 i was forced to take 15-75 mg of melarril daily. The "doctor was BARASI SILA in Baltimore,MD. while some friends were perscribed ritalin I knew noone else on mellarill. shortly after beginningh treatment I began experiencing facial grimacing that continues occasionally to this day. I also have what I term a mild form of tourettes syndrome (these symptoms ususlly occurr when I am alone) I now know this drug is now only used in extreme cases of schitsophrenia (excuse spelling) This treatment was part of an overall childhood of physical and emotional abuse. I wish I had never been subjected tothis form of chemical lobotomy. I would like to someday find out how many perscriptions for mellaril were written in 1973Read More Read Less

This drug caused severe blurring of my vision. It caused me to be extremely hyper. I could not sit still. It caused sleep problems,eg:dreams, doing odd things in my sleep. I gained twenty pounds in one month. I was given Cogentin to counter the side affects. I had to get glasses so I could read. To this day I still wonder how I kept from commiting suicide while on this drug. It was horrible.

doctor treated me for anxiety. First tried seraquel and I threw up. This is what he perscribed next. It seems a little heavy handed. Even though I am only taking 24ms, I can see this is a strong drug.I feel dizzy, head feels heavy and my movements are jerky.

I was misdiagnosed with Schizophrenia over 14 years ago. I had been on Mellaril for all that time. I have not taken it for over a year. Unfortunately, now, I have a heart condition. I have had it for quite sometime. I never had a serious mental illness. But now I have to live with this condition. What do I do?

Millaril worked in helping my anxiety and nervous habits, pulling hair etc, when Seroquel didn't. Bonus:: Seroquel costs USD$500+ for me and WalMart charges USD$4.00 for the Millaril.
