Within a day of leaving the hospital I was back at the doctor for the now spreading rash. I now have itching, redness and blisters on body areas that I did not have surgery on. The surgeon told me it was the Mastisol used during surgery and about 1 in 100 patients develop this reaction and that it is kind of like a poison ivy rash. Somehow the rash spreads and take a couple weeks to get better. Mine was very much like poison ivy in appearance and itchiness. He prescribed a prescription strength cortisone cream.

I had a complete thyroidectomy. The surgeon used Mastisol to secure the steri strips. I have had the same reaction as everybody else on here...severe itching,a rash with small blisters,the skin feels lumpy and hard. I have been applying cortisol and taking benadryl and applying ice it seems to only help with the itching...it looks horrible. I am only one week post op so I still have to keep the s ... I have used this product twice. The first time was after surgery to remove a plate in my leg. A few days after surgery, the 8" long incision was surrounded by small red bumps that turned into small blisters. The surgeon did not know what was causing it, but treated me for an infection. Once that had run its course I began getting the small, itchy blister patches all over my body, continuing to break out for two months. At the time nobody could tell me what it was, the dermatologist was mystified but finally decided after several trips back and many treatments tried to no avail, that it might be some kind of bedbug bites. Years later I had gall bladder surgery. Same reaction but 10x worse. After this relatively minor, routine surgery I was miserable. I could not tolerate sounds or touch, or food. Have never felt that way after 3 other surgeries. Everywhere they put the Mastisol was a swollen red welt that turned into oozing blisters. The oozing caused the steristrips to come loose, leaving one of my incisions gaping open. The rash and blisters spread out from there across my belly and eventually most of my body. It was incredibly uncomfortable, left me with patches of discolored skin that had no feeling for months, prevented me from even getting dressed for over a week due to the oozing being so bad it would soak through the bandages. The open incision took forever to close up, the rash was so itchy I thought I'd loose my mind, it was unsightly, especially on my face and hands. This time the surgeon could tell it was the mastisol because the initial rash was exactly where it was brushed on. This product should not be used!

Had surgery to transfer a tendon into first thumb jointon Wed. 1/30. 2 days later my hand and lower arm swelled up like a balloon with 9 clear fluid blisters around the two incisions and top of my hand.On tuesday the blisters looked black and had grown in size.The swelling caused the incision over the thumb to open and it cont to drawn but is starting to close.It was finally decided the mastisol h ... Had surgery to transfer a tendon into first thumb jointon Wed. 1/30. 2 days later my hand and lower arm swelled up like a balloon with 9 clear fluid blisters around the two incisions and top of my hand.On tuesday the blisters looked black and had grown in size.The swelling caused the incision over the thumb to open and it cont to drawn but is starting to close.It was finally decided the mastisol had caused an allergic reaction One month later the hand is still swollen and peeling like a bad sunburn. Because I had problems sleeping I had taken Benadryl 25 mg at bedtime and this probably saved my hand. I am on anticoagulants for last 17 years and also allergic to PCN and cephalasporins.

I had a roaring rash all over my back from this substance and a week later my face and throat started to swell up and I was back at the hospital. I had not had any allergic reactions like this before and now it is ten months after my fusion surgery and I am still having reactions including facial edema
