Have used this for over 50 years ... yes it burns like the devil the first time you apply it. Is so worth it though as it has eliminated soreness and infection in 100% of my brush burns, cuts, punctures and an assorted varities of things that would otherwise become sore, inflamed or worse yet infected. so is it worth the initial stinging. To me yes 100% of the time!!

My experience with Merthiolate extends over 70+ years. Only, had two problems with it. 1. It burns like the devil on an open would. 2. It's not easily available nowadays. I suspect there are two reasons it's fallen into disuse. 1. It burns like the devil on an open wound. Neosoporin, et al. don't, yet they do an equally good job. 2. If you want a immediate fix to a sore throat, try this. Have someone swab your tonsils and no more sore throat.

I've relied on merthiolate to treat cuts and scrapes for more than 70 years. I am a farmer and sometimes on a daily basis have cuts or scrapes that result in bleeding. I always have had merthiolate on hand a treat the scrape as soon as possible. If there is a burning sensation, I know the treatment works. Merthiolate is very effective in stopping slight bleeding.
