I was prescribed Xifaxan 550mg after being diagnosed with sibo. Have taken it for 10 of the 14 days and stopped due to excessive diarrhea, and a bad fever blister that developed on upper lip. Will discuss this with my GI when I visit in a month for the follow-up. I prefer to have the sibo symptoms over the IBS symptoms, and not take the meds. Has anyone taken this for preop colon surgery? My doctor has Put me on it for three days before surgery one pill a day. My colon immediately bloated up. I'm glad it is only for three days.

I just started Xifaxan yesterday. Sweaty all night,mould not sleep. Sicker this morning with cramps. Bloating, terrible dry mouth and thriat and now nausea. Took Alprazolam, Simithecone with Mylanta liquid, am no better. Took the first pill today anyway. Just getting worse. Anyone else had this happen? Husband won't take me to the ER again

I must be the only person that HATES this drug. My dr put me on it because he said I had bacteria from my liver. Gave me 60 550mg to take 2 X aday. I took 1 the first day because of the time I got them.In total I took 6 pills in 3 days. Like to have killed me. Had severe diarrhea.It was so bad If I even moved. Had to start wearing ladies diapers.That helped a little to get to the bathroom but not ... Show Full Comment

I took 1 the first day because of the time I got them.In total I took 6 pills in 3 days. Like to have killed me. Had severe diarrhea.It was so bad If I even moved. Had to start wearing ladies diapers.That helped a little to get to the bathroom but not alot. Couldn't do anything ,or eat anything. Bloated and cramping. Bad mucus which I still have now with blood in it. Stopped these 6 days after starting them and still can't get rid of side affects. All my dr's say is how wierd. And thats it. Has any one else had this much trouble?? And it's been a month and a half since I stopped these pills.

This drug has proven to be my miracle. I'd always run towards having hard stools most of my life,at times getting impacted. This changed, however, the June before last, in 2011. My stools started being occasionally bloody, always very loose, with much mucous. I'd even lost close to 50 lbs in about 15 months. Loving the weight loss but knowing it wasn't normal or healthy. This drug has proven to be my miracle. I'd always run towards having hard stools most of my life,at times getting impacted. This changed, however, the June before last, in 2011. My stools started being occasionally bloody, always very loose, with much mucous. I'd even lost close to 50 lbs in about 15 months. Loving the weight loss but knowing it wasn't normal or healthy. I'd had the same gastroenterologist since 1998, with him performing 2 colonoscopies and zillions of testing. He said I had colitis, in which he prescribed nightly Canasa suppositories. My family dr. finally referred me to a new, younger dr. He performed a 3rd colonoscopy finding I never had colitis at all. He said I either had IBS or pockets of bad bacteria in my colon. He gave me enough samples for 7 days of this drug and w/i 2 days, all my pain was gone and for the first time in my adult lifetime, am having normal BM's. No more diarrhea or hard stools. No more needing to take 2 Vicodin every 4 hrs. for the horrible cramping. These cramps were like labor pains or a very, very hard period. Apparently if I get it again, will just need to do another 7 days of this wonderful drug. The only side affect I found was slight water retention, but THAT I CAN DEAL WITH!!
