I am 66, have the gene for the high cholesteral. I took Lipitor 40 + Zetia and was so lame (charley horses !!) I could barely make the stairs. I now take Vytorin for the past few months and cholesteral numbers about the same as with the Lipitor. Weight going up with the Vytorin plus synthroid and Operamizol. Tired to stop the cholesteral med for a few months and #'s went way up over 300 fast. Cost of anything non generic is getting to be a real problem too.

Took for 15 years. perfect readings. blood tests every 3 months. still ended up with having a double bi pass. This drug will give excellent readings, but still give you CAD. A drug company scam.

The Vytorin 10/40 keeps my bad cholesterol low, however I have developed diabetes and a fatty liver. So it would seem one drug has induced two more diseases.

Good product no side effects. Quite costly! I read your Web MD article and am questioning whether to switch to Zocor or another statin which could be purchased as a generic. I will discuss with my Cardiologist first!

I switched from 10/40 to 10/20 due to muscle problems. No significant changes in my numbers as a result. Total chol went from 122 to 131 (originally 304), HDL unchanged, LDL from 64 to 77 (originally 163) and Trigly from 91 to 64 (originally 119). Per angiogram I have 2 arteries completely clogged and the third one 50% so couldn't do stents. But am asymptomatic due to good flow thru collateral arteries developed over the years!! They wanted to do a quad by-pass 6 years ago, but I said no! Best decision I made! Make sure you do your own research before accepting everything the doctors suggest!Read More Read Less

I was on Vytorin 10/20 for about 7 years. I had a stent placed in my LAD about 6 years ago. The Vytorin got me down from a total cholesterol of aroudn 240 and kept me in the 120's. All of the other numbers were great. The two arteries that were about 40% blocked 6 years ago became 75% and 100% blocked and I had to have more stents. When I asked the cardiologist about it she said the 10/20 was a low dosage and probably not much help and put me on Lipitor. When I asked the head of pharmacology in the cardiac wing of the hospital about it she said that Vytorin was not a good drug. She said doctors liked it because it was well tolerated and that it did lower cholesterol and kept numbers in good shape but it actually increased the plaque load. I guess this is why despite excercise and being pretty good about what I ate the arteries got worse. Jury's still out on the Lipitor.Read More Read Less

I was on Vytorin for 3 years. I had severe brain fog, overall muscle pain and high blood sugar - up to 128. I went off it 3 months ago and all symptoms went away and my blood sugar is now in the 80's and 90's/ My doctor told me that this drug does raise blood sugar, but it is extremely effective and it was my levels were 190, LDL was 100 and triglycerides were 100 and HDL was 60. I had a blood test after 3 months off vytorin and my cholesterol was 313, my LDL was 213, my trig. was 216 and my HDL was 68. My doctor put me on Welchol and we'll see in 4 months and if I can tolerate the drug. At this point I feel a very restricted diet and exercise is called for. I am 70 years old and have been on a statin for 20 years. I have always watched my diet, but not as well as I should have. If I have to get off Welchol, then I'll discuss with my doctor if I should go back on a low dose generic statin. Even though my LDL/HDL ratio was good she said I have to do something to lower the cholesterol. What bothered me the most was the increase in blood sugar, which would eventually lead to diabetes. That isn't mentioned in the many, many side effects. Read More Read Less

Bottom line - it works. Originally prescribed 10/40, but back and muscle pain was too much to handle. Went to 10/20 and the side effects were reduced - not eliminated. Quite honestly, I skip once or twice a week, just so I can sleep through the night.
