In 1970, he received a medical deferment for military service in Vietnam due to a congenital nasal defect, a deviated septum, that affected his breathing.
A star baseball pitcher, Richardson had hopes of playing professionally. During his junior year in college, he blew out his right elbow. The injury ended his baseball career.
