WebMD asked all the presidential candidates eight questions about how health affects them, from guilty pleasures to defining moments. Although John McCain has not yet responded to those questions, here are some health issues he or his family has faced.

In 1993, McCain had a cancerous mole removed from his shoulder. The mole was diagnosed as melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer. He had a recurrence of skin cancer in 2000 and surgery to remove two melanoma lesions, one from his left temple and the other from his left arm.

Presumptive Nominee

He was a POW in a Vietnamese prison camp for more than five years and still suffers from multiple injuries as a result of the experience, including a broken right knee that is now arthritic.

McCain had a procedure to treat an enlarged prostate in 2001.

He smoked until age 45.

His wife, Cindy, had a mild stroke in April 2004 due to high blood pressure..

McCain and his wife adopted daughter Bridget from an orphanage in Bangladesh in 1993. She was born with a cleft palate.
