- I usually run a couple of miles every other day -- sometimes on a treadmill, sometimes outdoors if suitable jogging trails are available. I also exercise on the stationary bike.
In addition to running, I also like to ski. And each year, my five sons and I compete against each other in a mini-triathlon.
What is your biggest obstacle to staying healthy?
- The campaign schedule can be demanding, but I usually try to eat several small meals throughout the day, in addition to maintaining a regular exercise routine. One of my favorite foods on the campaign is a turkey sandwich. Also, almost every morning and most nights, I enjoy my wife Ann's homemade granola with skim milk.
How do you handle the stress of the campaign?
- On the campaign trail, I try to eat well and work out regularly. I also look forward to spending time with Ann and my family whenever they are able to join me at campaign events.
What health challenges have you or your family faced?
- My wife Ann was diagnosed with MS several years ago. At the height of her illness, it was a difficult time for our entire family. Fortunately, through different therapies, her condition has improved and she's been able to maintain a pretty active campaign schedule as well.
Who's the health enforcer in your family? ("No, you're not smoking that cigarette"…"Sorry, no stops at Burger King today")
- Fortunately, I don't smoke or drink alcohol, so I generally stay out of that kind of trouble. Ann usually tries to make sure our entire family eats well, so I would say her.
Who makes the health/doctor appointments in your family?
- As the "chief family officer," Ann is usually the one that makes sure we visit the doctor regularly.
What is your favorite "guilty pleasure" food?
- Big Macs and chocolate malts.
Is there one experience that shaped your view of health?
- Ann's diagnosis with multiple sclerosis. It taught me that when crisis strikes, it is a great relief to have access to great doctors and hospitals, and insurance that covers it all. That's one of the reasons I fought for health insurance for all our citizens in Massachusetts when I was governor.
