Don Gruschow (GREW shouw) spent years as a pilot, but an eye 'attack' nearly clipped his wings.
And it continued to get worse, and then I noticed some blurring and some, an aura around lights.
Don's attack was caused by narrow angle glaucoma. It occurs when the eye fluid pipeline narrows or closes, then pressure spikes.
That high a pressure usually will send a patient to the emergency room with severe headache, nausea, vomiting.
Early diagnosis is hampered by the exams that artificially open the drains when the eye's exposed to light or surface pressure.
So if the drain is appearing open on examination, the eye doctor thinks it's not a problem.
To spy the drain channels, Doctor Asrani (ahhss RAHH nee) developed a device that uses infrared light like an ultrasound.
It's using light waves to be bounced off the surface of the eye, and therefore allowing us to see structures in the eye.
The painless test takes just a few seconds, and can reveal narrowing years before a sudden attack.
It might probably identify individuals a decade before they have permanent scarring in their angles.
Both of Don's eyes were diagnosed using the device, and a one-time procedure created new fluid drains.
I'm very happy it's around. I'm glad, very happy to have both my eyes.
An eye-saving technology that reveals a previously hidden danger. For WebMD, I'm Sandee Lamotte.
