Reading isn't just something Robert Hobbs loves. As a news editor, it's how he makes his living. That is, until a stroke drastically impaired his vision.
I went from reading fast to not reading at all. I mean, the words just, I could see letters on the screen, but I could not make those letters form words.
How many fingers do you see?
Robert didn't think he'd ever read again. Vision restoration therapy, VRT, gave him new hope.
Faced with that, I jumped into this program and I'm very glad I did.
We found that indeed, between two-thirds and three-quarters of patients do respond. One-fourth to one-third do not.
In addition to stroke, this therapy may also help restore vision loss due to macular degeneration, brain injury, inflammation or surgery. Here's how it works. Patients follow bright flashes of light that appear on the computer screen with their eyes. Neurologists believe that triggers dormant neurons to take over for damaged ones, improving vision.
The brain is the organ that really is in charge of seeing, not the eye.
Patients must do at least 30 minute sessions twice a day, for no less than six months.
Three months is when I really noticed that I was seeing better that I was reading better.
It's non-invasive and can be done at home.
My reading's probably improved 70 percent. It's still affected, but it's greatly improved.
Making this therapy, well, worth Robert's time commitment. For WebMD, I'm Damon Meharg.
