Back pain plagues millions of people in the U-S. Regular exercise can help lower your risk, but watch out! Some exercises could do more harm than good.
There are some exercises that we perform either in the gym or on our own... unknowingly, that may injure the back and set you up for increased injury.
Doctor Michael Weinik is a rehabilitation specialist with a safer, more effective approach, a series of exercises called dynamic muscular stabilization exercises.
What these exercises are, are a series of exercises that have greater carry-over for what you do in life... meaning that they're more functional activities.
They strengthen the muscles around the spine from the front, back, and sides without straining the lower back.
So you're going to lift your arm... you're going to raise your back leg... and you're going to maintain your spine in a normal curve.
The air-filled therapy ball is one of the keys to this training. It provides support while giving the entire trunk a workout.
So, you're strengthening while you're bending...while you're twisting.
But as always, be sure to check with your doctor before starting any exercise program.
Exercise is good for almost anybody of any age range, although not every exercise is good for everyone... and should really see your physician first to make sure you don't have certain conditions that would uh preclude you from starting a course of exercise.
