12-year old Dylan Pins is always ready for a pick-up game.
Cause there's really nothing to do inside, so we just go outside and figure out something to do.
That natural instinct to play is growing extinct in some kids, and it's resulting in serious health problems.
Unless you're living under a rock, you're aware of the obesity epidemic, children that are becoming diabetic at early ages.
Doctor Gotlin's leading the charge to get kids moving, and he's not just talking about structured activities.
Research shows that free play is the real time for physical fitness. Mentally and physically. Kids get to negotiate. Kids get to play. Kids get to decide.
You don' t need to go far or spend a lot of money to get your kids energized. Start right in your own backyard.
It just requires 45 minutes per day of physical activity. A walk together as a family is physical activity. Going to the park is an activity. Just being involved in the backyard is an activity.
If your child wants to do a team sport, go for it. But don't force it.
Don't push the child to do what they don't want to do. They won't succeed, and if a child doesn't succeed, they won't become confident.
The issue of joining a sports team is something Dylan's parents faced when he was younger.
It was difficult to get him involved and we did not push him. But all of a sudden, he came into his own and he excelled in sports and he enjoys it.
Helping Dylan call some of the shots when it comes to his fitness. For WebMD, I'm Damon Meharg.
