24-year-old Rich Ferguson owes a lot to Doctor Brian Sennett. He kept sports injuries from sinking Ferguson's wrestling career throughout high school and college.
He worked around different obstacles with me so I would be able to compete wrestling.
Ferguson's photo is part of the decor at The Penn Sports Medicine Center and he's been a regular visitor.
So many times it's managing the injury and understanding how a wrestler gets hurt so that we can help coach them as a physician to keep them from getting hurt again, in addition to taking care of the actual injury.
Doctor Sennett is an orthopedic surgeon with specialized training in sports medicine, but he treats more than just athletes.
The injuries that we see in athletics are very similar to what sometimes we see in worker's compensation, because it's really the extremity at risk and it's whether you're at risk from twisting it on the job or twisting it making a cut playing football.
Over the years, he's treated Ferguson for a dislocated elbow, a broken wrist and a re-injured elbow. As a college senior, Ferguson dislocated his shoulder.
He knew that it was a big year for me, that I had waited five years to have my senior year. I trained hard, went through a lot of adversity with other injuries, so he worked with me.
Once just a different way of taping up kept Ferguson on the mat.
I made it through the whole season without making the damage any worse.
But you don't have to be a top competitor to benefit. A sports medicine specialist can help any active individual get back on their game. For WebMD, I'm Sandee LaMotte.
