Yoga classes can look a little intimidating… but studio owner Jenni Fleming says there's a class for everyone.
Yoga consists of about 30 basic postures.
Hatha yoga is the most widely practiced form in the US. It's great for beginners because it teaches basic yoga poses. Another popular type is Vinyasa.
Vinyasa flow is just moving with your breath, making sure that on an inhale you're coming up or on an exhale, you're maybe forward folding.
On the exhale hands come down to heart center.
Vinyasa classes have boosted Ryan Hyland's golf game and his overall health.
The mental and physical advantages of yoga are incredible and they really have made me just live each day a lot better with more energy.
If you're an advanced athlete, ashtanga (ash-tong-a) yoga might be for you. It focuses on building strength. While Bikram (bik-ram) or "hotyoga, is practiced in a heated room, is very intense and not for everyone.
If you are pregnant, if you have blood pressure, if you have other health concerns, I would definitely ask your physician before you go into heated rooms.
If you're looking for something therapeutic, try Iyengar (eye-yin-gar) also known as yin yoga. It uses blocks and bolsters to ensure proper alignment and increase flexibility.
I think it's the panacea for basically your mind, body and soul.
Regardless of the type of yoga you choose, just trying it is the key to expanding your fitness flexibility. For WebMD, I'm Sandee LaMotte.
