Listeria Monocytogenes Bacteria Found in a Sample of Waffles in an Atlanta Plant

Sept. 2, 2009 - Kellogg's has recalled two Eggo products due to bacterial contamination at its Atlanta plant.

The recalled products are:

  • Kellogg's Eggo Cinnamon Toast waffles, 10-count package, UPC code 3800040440 with "Best If Used Before" dates beginning with: NOV22 10 EA, NOV23 10 EA and NOV24 10 EA.
  • Kellogg’s Eggo Toaster Swirlz Cinnamon Roll Minis eight-count package, UPC code 3800023370 with a "Best If Used Before" date beginning with NOV15 10 EA.

A routine inspection of the plant by the Georgia Department of Agriculture (GDA) found Listeria monocytogenes bacteria in a sample of Kellogg's Buttermilk Eggo Waffles.

None of this contaminated product was shipped. But "out of an abundance of caution," Kellogg's is voluntarily recalling 4,500 cases of two products made at the facility.

The products were shipped throughout the U.S. Retailers that received the products already have been told of the recall.

"No illnesses have been reported to date from any of the recalled products," Kellogg's told WebMD via email. "The FDA classified it as a Class II recall, which the agency defines as a situation where the probability of serious adverse health consequence is remote."

Kellogg's is conducting an investigation to find the source of the contamination. It is cleaning and sanitizing the plant under GDA supervision.

Listeria can cause listerosis, which can be a severe disease. The bacteria most often causes meningitis, with symptoms of high fever, severe headache, stiff neck, and nausea. Listerosis can also result in miscarriages and stillbirths. Infection can be fatal, especially to infants and the elderly and to people with weakened immune systems.
