Ground Beef Recalled Because of E. coli Risk

Fairbank Farms Recalls 545,699 Pounds of Fresh Ground Beef Products That May Be Tainted With E. coli

From the WebMD Archives

Nov. 2, 2009 -- Fairbank Farms of Ashville, N.Y., is recalling more than half a million pounds of fresh ground beef products that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

The USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service has found an association between the recalled products and a cluster of E. coli illnesses in Connecticut, Maine, and Massachusetts.

E. coli can cause diarrhea (which may be bloody), dehydration, and in the most severe cases, kidney failure. The very young, seniors, and people with weak immune systems are the most vulnerable.

Each package bears the establishment number "EST. 492" inside the USDA mark of inspection or on the nutrition label. These products were packaged on Sept. 15 and 16, 2009, and may have been labeled at the retail stores with a sell-by date from Sept. 19 through 28, 2009, unless otherwise noted above.

The recall also includes cases of 10-pound "FAIRBANK FARMS FRESH GROUND BEEF CHUBS" sent to retailers in Maryland, Massachusetts, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia for further processing. Those products likely won't bear the package dates and sell-by dates listed above, so the USDA advises customers with concerns to ask their stores if their products are subject to the ground beef recall.

In a news release, Fairbank Farms states that "any customers from northeastern or mid-Atlantic states who have identified recalled ground beef products should remove the product from their freezers and return it to their stores for full reimbursement."

Fairbank Farms also notes that the recalled products aren't on store shelves any longer, since they're past their expiration dates. But they may still be in consumers' freezers.

For more information, call Fairbank Farms' toll-free consumer hotline at 877-546-0122 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Eastern time. That hotline will have extended hours -- 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. -- on Monday, Nov. 2.
