Dunkin' Donuts Suspends Certain Drinks
July 1, 2009 -- Dunkin' Donuts today announced that it is temporarily suspending its hot chocolate and Dunkaccino drinks because of a salmonella problem with the supplier of those drink mixes.
Salmonella bacteria can cause diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, abdominal cramps, fever, nausea, and vomiting.
The recall is a precaution, notes Andrew Mastrangelo, public relations manager for Dunkin' Brands Inc.
"We have confirmed that no Dunkin' Donuts products were contaminated," Mastrangelo tells WebMD in an email. He says that only the hot chocolate and Dunkaccino drinks have been withdrawn, and that those products should be available again "shortly."
Mastrangelo says Dunkin' Donuts got mixes for its hot chocolate and Dunkaccino drinks from Plainview Milk Products Cooperative of Plainview, Minn.
Earlier this week, Plainview Milk Products Cooperative recalled all of its instant nonfat dried milk, whey protein, fruit stabilizers, and gums (thickening agents) made in the past two years after FDA tests showed salmonella on some of its equipment.
None of Plainview's products were sold directly to the public and no illnesses have been reported, according to the FDA, which is working to identify other products that contain the recalled Plainview products.
