NCQA stands for the National Committee for Quality Assurance. The NCQA is a private, non-profit organization focused on improving the quality of health care. The NCQA provides accreditation to a wide range of health care organizations, including health plans that meet its rigorous standards. When you see the NCQA seal on a health plan's materials, that indicates that the plan will provide a certain level of quality care.

The NCQA grants many levels of accreditation status to health plan, including:

    • Excellent
    • Commendable
    • Accredited
    • Provisional

You can use NCQA accreditation status to compare health plans. Each year, the NCQA provides rankings for health plans on its web site.
