Alzheimer's disease is no stranger to Nancy Puckett. She lost her husband and her mother to it, and knows finding out early can make all the difference.
I really wanna take the, the word out there to everybody for early intervention. I believe that it helped with my husband.
So she's eager to help find better detection tools; she's taking part in a study evaluating a new testing method to screen mild mental impairment before it progresses. It combines a quick cognitive test, like remembering a few words or drawing a certain time on a clock, with a questionnaire answered by a loved one.
So for a three minute investment on face to face time, and using a questionnaire that doesn't take any time out of the clinic, that a reliable person that knows you can fill out for us, by combining those and we were over 90% accurate.
The testing method is so quick and easy. It's likely family doctors could incorporate it into regular exams.
Just as you would take blood pressure, or height or weight, you would do this sort of at baseline, and monitor periodically over time.
And with such a simple test, a diagnosis can be made soon enough to start memory-preserving drug therapies.
They're still driving, they can handle money, they can make decisions for themselves and they have an excellent quality of life. So what we'd like to do, is identify people at that stage and hold them there.
And that's something Nancy hopes can be achieved sooner, rather than later. For WebMD, I'm Sandee Lamotte.
