Don Ablin's (ABB linnz) tried physical therapy to help manage his Parkinson's disease, but it isn't a favorite.
Just to move or do physical therapy can be dull.
Now he's stepping out of his comfort zone into a dance class that's anything but dull.
Dance therapy has a different effect on patients, and in these individuals, it's extraordinary because it's sort of a back door into therapy.
Rush University Medical Center is studying the effect dance has on parkinson's patients.
It allows them to have a certain fluidity of their movements. Now we know that patients with Parkinson's need the movements, they need the space.
The classes are led by a former professional dancer, who encourages stretching and movement.
This time the knee comes to the elbow.
She'll go like this, or like this, and they'll have to do the same thing and then they start combining these different movements. Meanwhile the trunk control from the neck down to the, to the hips, starts to improve.
Not only is balance better, but quality of life is, too.
They're improving in balance, they're improving in their activities of daily living, and they're improving socially, excuse me, socially, and also in their attitudes towards their life.
It's a feeling echoed by Don.
You know, I break out in a sweat, and but the most enjoyable part is the other people.
