Dale Nevels (NEVV ulz) was wide awake when electrodes were implanted in his brain.
It's an unusual feeling to have someone working on your head, and you can't see but you're, you're back there, you know, he's back there and you're trusting that person immensely.
Dale is part of a unique study at Vanderbilt University Medical Center testing deep brain stimulation, or D-B-S.
The stimulation therapy helps reduce the over-activity of just a certain area of the brain that's been found to be partially responsible for the symptoms.
Surgeons place wire leads into both sides of the brain. Then, an electrical signal blocks erratic impulses that trigger tremors and other symptoms. Since D-B-S has only been used in patients with advanced Parkinson's, it's posed an intriguing question.
If the therapy were applied in the very earliest stages of Parkinson's disease, could it prove to slow the progression of the disease?
Several weeks after the implant surgery, Dale's wire contacts were turned on and tuned-in. And once the settings are made, Dale's signature is transformed.
Just in 30-minutes time, the signature was like two different days, two different guys had signed it. It was amazing.
Results like this are anticipated from deep brain stimulation.
One of the great things about it, is it helps a whole host of symptoms from Parkinson's disease. It can improve not only tremor, but also stiffness in the muscles.
And now Dale is ready to set his sights on the golf course where Parkinson's interfered with his game.
I'm going just play golf like there's no tomorrow.
