In all his years, Harry Vickers says his recent stay at the hospital was the most positive.
When you get ninety-three, they think, "well he, he not gonna be here long anyway. Ain't no point in wasting time on him", and…but they're not that way. I mean, it was just altogether different, really.
We kind of describe ourselves as low tech, high touch. And those are the things that have been kind of missing in hospital care.
That shift helps define an ACE unit, or Acute Care for Elders. The ACE team coordinates all aspects of a patient's care, starting with a daily team meeting.
It prevents them from having to dig through a thick medical chart where they might get bits of information. Now they can actually talk to the therapist, talk to the nutritionist, talk to the social worker, talk to the nurse practitioner.
This level of communication doesn't just save time, it also helps ensure all aspects of an older patient's healthcare are considered.
In frail older adults, you really can't just treat pneumonia. You have to treat Mrs. Jones, for example, who has pneumonia but is also falling, maybe a little depressed, maybe a little bit of memory loss.
Doctor Flood says ACE units also have a good track record for helping patients return home.
More people are able to leave and go home, as opposed to going to a nursing home.
The team approach appealed to Harry… he has nothing but praise for his care.
They're trying every way in the world I think to really make, make it feel more personal and I think they're doing a real good job there.
Earning an "A" for the ACE team. For WebMD, I'm Damon Meharg.
