It's been fifty years since Wayne and Carol Kussow (KOO so) were in high school.
You can see my flattop even better there.
Not only is this anniversary special for the couple, it also marks the fiftieth year they've participated in one of the world's longest-running studies. It started with a short survey.
And asked the kids about their social background, about their activities and courses in high school and about their plans for the future.
This simple beginning eventually branched out, covering careers, parenting, and health. Doctor Hauser says personal health ratings have been accurate predictors.
Virtually everybody who said that their health was excellent, very good, or good survived the next decade.
Now, the survey is going high tech, by obtaining thousands of saliva samples for DNA analysis.
They gave us a small, what looked like a small container, until we started spitting into it and then it became a large container.
The researchers will use the samples in genetic tests, looking for clues to depression, alcoholism, and dementia.
The first set of assays that we're planning, and are going to be, first of all, for APOE, that's the allele that's most closely associated with the late onset of Alzheimer's disease.
For Carol and Wayne, the chance to contribute information, and now their DNA, has been more than worthwhile.
If this is going to generate information that's going to be of benefit to people down the line, certainly we wanted to participate.
Resulting in a legacy of knowledge that could benefit generations. For WebMD, I’m Sandee LaMotte.
