Cliff Chelist (CHELL-is) is hard of hearing.
Women talking
So, in social situations, he's often left in the dark.
You're trying to pick out the conversation from somebody and it's distorted.
He has a hearing aid, but it doesn't help him distinguish voices.
It's all confusing because it's all amplified together.
Okay we're ready to start.
Now he hopes a new computer program that mimics noisy situations will help.
Computer sounds
Researchers at Washington University in Saint Louis are testing new software they developed to teach people with hearing loss a different way to listen.
We teach them how to distinguish sounds such as 'bah' and 'mah' that look very much alike on the lips, 'bah', 'mah'. How to begin to listen for the differences in those sounds even though they're degraded.
The cheerleader shouted give me a 'P'.
Participants learn to make educated guesses based on the situation – to listen to meaning instead of just sound.
We provide listening practice in the context of a restaurant, in the context of a baseball game, in the context of a party. So you practice listening to things that you might actually hear in your day to day life.
Cliff is six weeks into the program and he's already encouraged.
I love a challenge. I'm a competitive person.
Woman talking
Maybe one day his only challenge will be getting a word in edgewise. For WebMD, I'm Damon Meharg.
