Parkinson’s disease is a “movement” disorder with a noticeable tremor. But patients like Duke Mader (may-der) will tell you there are also troublesome symptoms you can’t see.
Sleeplessness, some nights I go three days without sleeping at all.
He doesn't talk about it to his neurologist, ironically, 'cause he feels that it's not part of the disease.
But it is. So are constipation, urinary incontinence, sexual dysfunction and mood disorders.
Those are what we call the non-motor symptoms. And for years and years, these went under-recognized.
Now they may get more attention because researchers at the University of South Florida helped develop new treatment guidelines.
Before we were focusing on the motor symptoms. Now, with a screening tool, it’s easier for us to ascertain what are the non-motor symptoms for patients and to better handle these, these symptoms.
The guidelines recommend the most effective medications for specific non-motor symptoms. They also suggest that neurologists reach out to other subspecialties on hard-to-treat cases.
For example: Suppose a patient has refractory constipation and we give them regular medication. It’s not uncommon that we have to pick up the phone and talk to a gastroenterologist to discuss the patient’s care and how to better treat the patient.
Patients can help themselves by speaking up about ‘all’ of their symptoms – whether they think they're linked to Parkinson’s or not.
Treating non-motor symptoms in Parkinson’s disease patients can make a huge difference.
A difference that can make a huge improvement in their lives. For WebMD, I’m Sandee LaMotte.
