With each step, Doug Williamson hopes to regain the active life he had before parkinson's disease.
Even at 59 years old I was still very active. And now, I couldn't do some of the things I could do a year earlier.
Doug is taking part in a collaborative study through the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center, to see if exercising with Nordic walking poles can help.
With the poles, it maintains, helps me maintain my balance and I'm able to, uh, continue without losing a stride.
The study lasts 36 weeks - 24 with no exercise and 12 using the poles.
We've been meeting here at the recreation center, um, and exercising with the poles three days a week for 45 minutes each time.
Researchers believe pole striding will be the perfect fit for controlling Parkinson's symptoms, like shuffling gait and loss of balance.
We're integrating all the muscles of the chest, the back, the shoulders, the torso, the whole trunk and everything.
Participants will also be tested for improved motor skills and brain function. Doctor Holly Shill will conduct the assessments and has already seen the success of exercise.
You see the patients that exercise regularly, uh, seem to do better over time. They just have a slower progression of their disease.
It has helped and I'm looking forward to walking a lot in the future.
A big step towards finding a way to battle the effects of parkinson's disease. For WebMD, I'm Damon Meharg.
