Like every part of the body, the human voice changes with age.
Good morning, how can I help you?
These University of Florida researchers are exploring how it changes.
What we are trying to do now is try to study what is it that a listener uses to detect, "oh that's how old the person is."
The researchers played recorded voices to a group of listeners. Then asked, how old do you think this man is?

What about this one?

Actually both voices are the same 81-year-old man. By computer altering voices, the researchers identified two key characteristics that give away age.
As a man ages, the, the rate of speech becomes slower and the pitch becomes slightly higher.
Listeners were less easily fooled by young voices manipulated to sound old. This man is 26.

The next step is to collect women's voices and find their age defining clues.

Researchers also plan to expand the age range of their listeners.
We suspect but we don't know, we have to investigate this, that your own age and your experience, lifetime experience in hearing voices will affect your perception of age.
Results of the study could be used in police work and in treating speech disorders. For WebMD, I'm Sandee Lamotte.
