Jennifer Selter (SELLter) used to shy away from cameras because she hated her nose.
I was very self-conscious before with everything, like pictures, like people staring at me.
My daughter was suffering a lot before surgery. I mean, she would get teased every day.
When Jennifer turned fifteen, her mom felt she was ready for rhinoplasty.
The family dynamic is very, very important. And the family needs to be supportive.
Teens aren't just little adults, so Doctor Rizk (rizzk) has rules, starting with minimum ages: 14 for girls and 15 for boys.
Other factors that I ask for a female is, did she have her first period, or has her foot fully grown?
Physical maturity isn't the only factor… so is psychological maturity.
I always consult with a psychologist to make sure that they're psychologically stable, and that the rhinoplasty is the right thing to do for them.
The surgery also requires more delicate tools and a lighter hand.
So even though they've matured and they've reached their maximal growth, I do still do a different operation than I would normally do in adults. And it's a very conservative, much more conservative operation.
And while some would say this type of surgery can wait 'til adulthood, Doctor Rizk has another perspective.
If it's a major, large nose that is affecting them, that warrants surgery basically to make them focus on school rather than their nose.
And help level the playing field among teen peers. For WebMD, I'm Sandee LaMotte.
