57-year-old Sachiko (sah-CHEE-koh) Takase (tah-KAH-say) wants to keep her high blood pressure in check. Recently, it's jumped to 150 over 90. A normal blood pressure reading is less than 120 over 80.
My blood pressure was slightly high, not high enough for me to be on medication and I had heard so many good things about soy that I thought, well this is just perfect, you know, study for me.
Sachiko is taking part in a new government study looking at the effects soy has on lowering blood pressure. She takes a specific compound of soy called isoflavones (eye-so-FLAY-vones).
The recommendation here is not to go out and eat a lot of soy, like tofu and other things that contain soy because we don't know what components have what effects on blood pressure at this point.
Doctor Taylor and his research team think isoflavones increase a substance in the blood called nitric oxide.
It's actually a radical substance that interacts with blood vessels and it causes them to relax. And by doing so, that lowers blood pressure.
As part of the study, Sachiko wears a device that monitors her blood pressure for an entire 24-hour period. So far she's sold on the power of the soy. Her blood pressure's down about 20 points. For WebMD, I'm Sandee LaMotte.
