Daily asthma treatment plans

An asthma treatment plan outlines in writing how to treat your asthma on a daily basis. You need to treat the inflammation in your lungs to prevent or slow the development of the long-term effects of asthma.

You determine your daily asthma treatment plan with your health professional. The plan generally includes:

• Treatment goals, which include personal goals you set regarding your asthma.
• An outline of the medications you take daily for control of airway inflammation and when to take them.
• How to measure your peak expiratory flow (PEF) with a peak flow meter.
• Directions for recording PEF, symptoms and their triggers, and quick-relief medication used for symptoms in an asthma diary(What is a PDF document?).

A daily asthma treatment plan is often combined with an asthma action plan, which tells you how to treat asthma attacks.
