Fever with swelling, pain, redness, or warmth in or around a joint

A fever and symptoms of infection in or around a joint may mean that a serious joint, bursa, or bone infection is present. Other symptoms may include:

  • New swelling.
  • Severe pain.
  • Sudden redness.
  • Warmth in or around a joint.
  • Decreased movement of joints because of severe pain.
  • Drainage of pus.

A fever and signs of infection around a joint needs immediate medical care.
