Other conditions with symptoms similar to dysfunctional uterine bleeding

Many different health problems can cause the same or similar symptoms as dysfunctional uterine bleeding.

Very common and less serious conditions that can cause abnormal vaginal bleeding include:

• Uterine fibroids.
• Adenomyosis.
• An abnormally shaped uterus (uterine anomaly).

Possible serious causes of abnormal vaginal bleeding include:

• Reproductive organ cancers.
• Problems with pregnancy, such as:
  • Ectopic pregnancy.
  • Threatened or incomplete miscarriage.
  • Placenta previa or placenta abruptio.

Conditions that can cause changes in your menstrual periods include:¹

• Abnormal growth outside of the uterus (adnexal mass).
• Endometrial hyperplasia.
• Endometrial cancer.
• Endometriosis.
• Fluctuating hormone levels.
• Ovarian cysts.
