Other conditions with symptoms similar to scoliosis

Scoliosis can be accompanied by abnormal kyphosis, a backward curve of the upper spine that exceeds 50 degrees, causing the person to have a hunched back. This condition can be painful. The cause is usually unknown, but the condition may be present at birth or the result of injury, infection (such as tuberculosis) or disease (such as osteoporosis), paralysis, or tumors.

Swayback (abnormal lordosis) may also accompany scoliosis. Abnormal lordosis is an excessive forward curve in the upper or lower back.
