Other conditions with symptoms similar to sinusitis

Facial pain and pressure seen in sinusitis could be caused by many other conditions. Other possible causes of these types of symptoms include:

  • Colds that affect the nose (upper respiratory infections).
  • Allergies.
  • Noncancerous (benign) growths in the nose (nasal polyps).
  • Tension, cluster, migraine, or other types of headaches.
  • Tooth grinding or temporomandibular (TM) disorder.
  • Toothache.
  • Cancer in the nasal cavity or sinus (rare).
  • A sudden, stabbing pain in the face that occurs at irregular intervals (trigeminal neuralgia or tic douloureux).
