Life-Changing Treatment: When a Good Relationship Is Critical
McDonald’s trust in Sauk was a big factor when she needed to make a decision about surgery. In fact, it was that relationship that eventually helped her decide to have a colectomy and ileostomy, a surgical procedure in which her colon was removed and her small intestine attached to the abdominal wall.
"She told me I should start considering surgery while she was holding my hand and rubbing my back," says McDonald. "I wouldn't have wanted anyone else to tell me that."
Just a year after surgery, McDonald can sit through an entire movie, fly on an airplane, and go out with friends without having to look for a bathroom – all things she had not been able to do since she was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. She has started eating salads for the first time in 15 years.
"If it wasn't for Dr. Jenny, I don’t think I would have considered surgery," she says. "I think I would have suffered. She was very instrumental in improving my life."
