For more than a decade, Michael Kaplan has avoided nuts and seeds because he has diverticulosis.
I really miss blueberries, and certainly when you go to the movies to just watch your wife eat the popcorn and you have to sit there...
Michael's condition means he has pockets in the weak spots of his colon. The older we get, the more common they become.
Diverticulosis, or the presence of a pouch, absolutely a normal evolutionary, anatomic feature. But when that pouch becomes either inflamed or starts to bleed, then that requires medical attention.
To prevent flare-ups, Michael eats a high-fiber diet and avoids nuts and other foods that could lodge in the pouches. However, a new study may 're-seed' his diet.
Contrary, perhaps, to popular myth, that the men who were having large amounts, or more frequent amounts of these foods, did not have increased bouts of diverticulitis or divericular bleeding.
Nearly 48 thousand men took part in the study. And it turns out, foods like popcorn and nuts don't always trigger trouble.
What one would ordinarily eat in a regular diet, there is no concern of any kind with respect to flaring up of a diverticulitis or inducing bleeding.
It's welcome news to Michael, who would like to add some old favorites to his diet.
I was absolutely delighted today to hear that I can have blueberries again.
Food for thought as he manages his condition. For WebMD, I'm Damon Meharg.
