Joe Giffels, MAS, is assistant vice president of academic affairs and director of research integrity at the University of Maryland, Baltimore.

Giffels earned dual degrees in chemistry and biology. Following several years of conducting basic biomedical research as a research associate in the Neurovirology Laboratories at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, he served as the administrator and as a member of an Institutional Review Board -- the committee responsible for reviewing and approving research involving human subjects. He has also served as the director of research and professional education of the Epilepsy Foundation of America.

Having written extensively on the regulation and practice of clinical research, Giffels has authored a booklet, Clinical Trials: What You Should Know Before Volunteering To Be A Research Subject, specifically written to help the potential research volunteer decide whether to participate in a clinical trial.

His training and experience have prepared Giffels to understand and speak about clinical research issues from the perspectives of clinical trial participants and investigators.
