Malignant Mesothelioma Treatment (PDQ®): Treatment - Health Professional Information [NCI] - Localized Malignant Mesothelioma (Stage I)

Standard treatment options:[1]

  1. Solitary mesotheliomas: Surgical resection en bloc including contiguous structures to ensure wide disease-free margins. Sessile polypoid lesions should be treated with surgical resection to ensure maximal potential for cure.[2]
  2. Intracavitary mesothelioma:
    • Palliative surgery (i.e., pleurectomy and decortication) with or without postoperative radiation therapy.
    • Extrapleural pneumonectomy.
    • Palliative radiation therapy.

General Information About Small Cell Lung Cancer

Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) accounts for approximately 15% of bronchogenic carcinomas. At the time of diagnosis, approximately 30% of patients with SCLC will have tumors confined to the hemithorax of origin, the mediastinum, or the supraclavicular lymph nodes. These patients are designated as having limited-stage disease (LD).[1] Patients with tumors that have spread beyond the supraclavicular areas are said to have extensive-stage disease (ED). SCLC is more responsive to chemotherapy and radiation...

Current Clinical Trials

Check for U.S. clinical trials from NCI's list of cancer clinical trials that are now accepting patients with localized malignant mesothelioma. The list of clinical trials can be further narrowed by location, drug, intervention, and other criteria.

General information about clinical trials is also available from the NCI Web site.
