Aaron VanDemark has cystic fibrosis.
When I was diagnosed my doctors told my parents that I might not live to the age of three.
Now in his 30's, Aaron's hoping to help others by volunteering for a study to measure chloride levels in CF patients.
If there's less chloride there, um there's typically less water and the lungs dry out.
The drier a CF patient's lungs, the more severe their disease. Currently the only way to measure chloride levels is through an invasive test.
A bronchoalveolar lavage is an invasive procedure, uhm, where a tube is inserted into the airways and a small amount of fluid is squirted into the airways and then sucked out.
We don't have good non-invasive tools for understanding when someone is experiencing lung disease in CF.
So the University of Arizona researcher team hopes to replace this invasive procedure with a simple breath test.
The subject or patient breathes on a machine that just condenses their exhaled air with a cooling unit and then we get a small sample.
To determine the accuracy of the breath test, Doctor Daines will also use the traditional bronchioscope to get a sample. Then, both will be compared.
A test like the test that Dr. Snyder is, is working on here, would help us to make clinical decisions on how to treat that patient.
A simple test that could change the lives of all CF patients. For WebMD, I'm Damon Meharg.
