If you wanna' tighten this one up for me that'd be good.
There was a time when Mike Bouzis (BO-zis) felt as run down as the world war two jeep he's working on.
I've been an athlete, I've been an officer in the Marine Corp and was very, very active, and then this respiratory problem hit me.
Mike thought he was just out of shape, but his symptoms of extreme fatigue and shortness of breath were diagnosed as sarcoidosis (SAR-coy-DOH-sis).
Sarcoidosis is an inflammation in the lung.
Doctor Cecile (suh-seel) Rose heads a major study on the disease at National Jewish Medical Center in Denver.
It seems to be an immune reaction in the lung that results in inflammation that can lead to scarring if it’s untreated.
If the scarring gets worse, the lung can shrink in size as seen in these x-rays.
The lung is much smaller than it should be and we can see that best here in the right lung.
Doctors have yet to pinpoint the underlying cause of sarcoidosis. Ninety percent of the time the disease affects the lungs, but it can also affect other organs of the body.
The eye, the heart, the skin, the lymph nodes, really any organ can be affected by sarcoidosis.
For the most part though, the disease is very treatable and best caught early on. After a stint on potent anti-inflammatories... Mike has enough pep to exercise again.
My number one goal is I'm not gonna' be one of those little old people pulling around an oxygen bottle.
He's working 'up' a sweat... So the disease won't get him 'down.' For WebMD, I’m Damon Meharg.
