Gracelyn Mansfield is a ball of energy now, but as an infant, her parents nearly lost her to pertussis (per TUH sis), better known as whooping cough.
And I was changing her clothes to get her ready for bed, and she started having the coughing fit.
Healthcare workers, including those who took care of Gracelyn, are exposed to whooping cough as they treat these contagious patients.
What a standard of care now is that anyone who's exposed in the hospital will get antibiotic therapy to prevent secondary spread of, of whooping cough.
It's the antibiotic therapy that's in question since healthcare workers now get booster shots against pertussis.
What we don't know is, if you've been vaccinated against pertussis, and you're exposed to someone with pertussis, do you still need to get antibiotics?
A two year study at Vanderbilt University's Children's Hospital may soon answer that question. A thousand people were vaccinated, and if exposed to pertusis, only half received an antibiotic.
We hope to say, was the, was the incidence of pertussis in this arm with antibiotics the same or different in the arm that didn't get antibiotics. And if it was no difference, we may now be able to argue that if you got the vaccine, you don't need antibiotics.
Results of the study are due soon, potentially leading to reduced antibiotic use among the people who take care of us. For WebMD, I'm Sandee.
